In 2004, Barbie® Collector introduced a color-coded “tier structure” system. Each tier represents an identifiable level of doll collecting. It also tells which store the doll will have an exclusive release. Each level also has very distinct packaging. It is unmistakable which level your doll belongs in.
This is how Mattel describes their Collector's Label system
Inspired by the innovation of today's most successful designers, the label color segments the Barbie Collector dolls and indicates where they can be found. Starting with the Pink Label (pink being Barbie® doll's signature color, of course!), then the Silver, Gold, and Platinum Labels – each color represents the high standards of each successive tier.
The Pink Lable is the first tier of collecting.
These dolls come packaged in a box with a clear acetate front trimmed in pink Pink Label dolls do not have a predetermined production quota. These dolls will be available at many qualified retailers and always premiere at Wal-Mart and WalMart.com

The Silver Label is the second tier of collecting.
Up to 50,000 pieces will be produced worldwide, and each comes packaged in a silvery-trimmed package box. They are available at toy retailers. They alway premiere at Toys ‘R Us and Toysrus.com.

The Gold Lable is the third tier of Collecting
Up to 25,000 dolls produced worldwide. The Gold Label dolls come in a “cake box” type package they even have an acetate layer to protect the doll. The label has interpretive photography or other artwork on the gold-trimmed packaging lid and back. Gold Label dolls are distributed via authorized Barbie doll dealers as well as at fine retailers and through the Barbie® Collector catalog. The Gold Lable the first Barbie Collector doll to be seen on store shelves in the new packaging.

The Platinum Label is the fourth tier and the mother of Collecting
Less than 1,000 dolls are produced worldwide, including premium one-of-a-kind dolls available at select event such as those produced for CAAF's annual Dream Halloween events. These dolls also include Platinum Label™ editions of the Badgley Mischka Bride Barbie® (created exclusively for FAO Schwarz) and Faerie Queen™ Barbie® Doll (created exclusively for Toys ‘R Us), among others.
